Arts Week
Our annual Arts Week was held from 28th January to 1st February. It never fails to deliver, and this year was no exception! With the theme being “The Best of Hong Kong”, Ms. Roberts Whitman took a group of students to sample some of our local street foods on Tuesday after school. A couple of brave boys even ventured into the world of Chinese herbal teas! Following this fun experience was a lunch time cooking demonstration and food tasting of bubble waffles and Hong Kong style milk tea. All in all, a lovely way to celebrate all the wonderful delicacies we can find in our amazing Hong Kong!
Also on Tuesday, 29th January, the light was perfect for a walk with our cameras to the village of Ma Wan Chung hidden away close to the water and not far from YHKCC. Ms. Simonsen guided the students with their camera settings and introduced composition rules to help with framing and shooting. We spent time photographing the textures, colours and reflections of the urban landscape and captured the contrast between the small buildings and boats next to the high-rise apartments of Tung Chung. It was a fun and relaxed way to encourage the student’s creativity and explore a local Hong Kong visual dialogue through a lens.
In the art room Ms. King showed a group of eager painters how to go about creating their own rendition of the Hong Kong skyline on canvas. The participating students showed some really impressive painting skills and also dedication, staying late into the evening to complete their work. Step by step we looked at creating an underpainting and building up to the skyscrapers, lights, water reflections and even the iconic aqua luna. The results were very impressive and each student took their masterpiece home.
To celebrate the Chinese New Year and ‘Year of the Pig’ on Thursday of the Arts Week, Ms. Morin and Ms. Heung showed students how to create their very own piggy bank. Many students gathered in the covered playground and modelled their cute pigs around a plastic mould. The making of piggy banks was a big success with each student learning how to craft using air drying clay. It also provided a handy way to save all those red packets. The end products were awesome!
For Music, Cantopop Karaoke Challenge was held on 30th January (Wed), with a full house in Studio 2. For each round, there was a maximum of five singers competing together by singing the selected excerpts. The teacher adjudicators judged and even sang with the students during the practice session. After several rounds, the top few karaoke kings and queens were awarded prizes! It was a fun-filled event with applause and laughter.
Our student helpers did an amazing job to make the event a successful one, including registration at the door, hosting by the MCs, serving drinks to the audience, taking photos and videos.
